Southern Costa Rica is the last frontier of
Costa Rica. It has sustained from the major
tourism growth due to it proximity from San
Jose. A typical bus ride from San Jose to
Golfito, the major town in Southern Costa Rica
could take up to 8 or more hours. Golfito is
Costa Ricas major southern port until the mid
1980’s it was the center for the banana-growing
region. The United Fruit Company used to have
its headquarter in this area and since its close
this town suffered from economic loss and
unemployment. However in the recent years
tourism has slowly come to this rustic tranquil
city and many use this city as a stop over for a
day or two.
Sportfishing and surfing are the major
highlights of Southern Costa Rica and many sport
fisherman use Golfito as home base while they
are out catching Pacific sailfish. The best
season for this is November to May. Surfing is
also world renowned here in Pavones just 2 hours
south of Golfito and it is said to be the
longest left point break in the world. On a good
south swell you can ride the wave for over 3
minutes. At the end of the ride you have to get
out of the water and walk back, it is that long.
